Did you know we have a Ganbanyoku (Rock Bathing) spa in Toronto?
I certainly didn’t until I came across Iyashi Bedrock Spa.
I had the pleasure to try the rock bathing and hot yoga recently, and I am very pleased with how relaxing and rejuvenating this therapy is. At your arrival, you change to t-shirt and shorts (getting prepared to sweat) and you must drink at least 1-2 cups of water or green tea to avoid dehydration. There are two types of suites available; traditional and deluxe (has 4 beds). The traditional has 17 stone beds and on this day we did our treatment in this room, followed by hot yoga.
Ganbanyoku is slab of heated stone that you can lie on that is heated to about 42C with the humidity set at approximately 63%. For some people 42C might be too hot to handle, but the benefits are worth it. You’ll sweat more bedrock bathing than sitting in a sauna.
You lie on the stone bed with a large towel underneath you and another rolled up to support your head. The stones you lie on are called Black Silica, which come from the mountains of Japan. They contain many natural minerals and are treasured for their ability to emit Far-Infrared Rays and Negative Ions.
Within 10-15 minutes, your body is heated and you start to sweat. It’s recommended that you take breaks to cool down and repeat the treatment a few times for best benefits. Some of the key benefits include increase in metabolism and release of harmful metals, as well as pain relief. If you do the yoga after you can really feel the increase in flexibility.
Overall this was a very good experience and I do recommend trying Rock Bathing as it was relaxing and rejuvenating. Iyashi offers many packages including detox and unlimited passes.
